W S am Adv Fall I 2017

During the Fall 1, 2017 session students from the advanced class read Amy Pastan’s biography of Dr. Martin Luther King. The advanced class did a great job of reading and discussing this book. For many students, this was the first complete book they had read in English. As a culminating project, students wanted to share what they had learned. In groups students prepared exhibits highlighting different aspects of MLK’s life and times. Each group prepared a poster and a short presentation. On October 12, different groups from the other advanced class and intermediate classes came to tour the student exhibits. One of the Intermediate 2 classes also shared about the novel they had read, “The Magic Paper.” The students were engaged sharing what they had learned in small group conversations. Topics included Segregation and Jim Crow, MLK’s philosophy, MLK’s personal life, Civil Rights Legislation Passed, and Examples of Non-Violent Resistance.
